We were recently contacted by a customer who had a fire in her home & wanted her carpets cleaned due to residual smoke and soot. As the customer had sisal carpets, these could not be wet cleaned via rinse extraction which is our most common form of cleaning carpets. Sisal is a natural plant based material which is very absorbent & prone to staining especially discolouration where the polymer fibres become overwet.

Last week saw our technician Jon use the very low moisture (VLM) cleaning method to clean the customers carpets. This method involves the application, agitation, then dry extraction of a cleaning compound which lightly cleans & freshens up sisal. We did advise the customer that the clean may not entirely lift all the soot because of the limitations inherent in the process (and the density of the carpets’ weave), but a very thorough approach using more than sufficient dry compound should provide some improvement.

Our technician started by using the Prochem PRO35 Contra rotating brush machine which evenly distributes & brushes in the sisal cleaning compound. This compound has a saw dust like appearance which is then left to work for 45 minutes.

This compound is ever so slightly damp with a sisal cleaning solution.

Once sufficient time has passed, trays are attached to the sides of the machine & it then sweeps approximately 90% of the compound into the trays. The remaining material can then be vacuumed up.

The VLM cleaning method has provided a light clean & freshened up the customer sisal carpets.
