Successful day of carpet & rug cleaning in Bristol

The start of a new week saw two of our technicians spend the whole of Monday in Bristol cleaning a large range of carpets, rugs & doormats for a domestic customer. Thankfully there were no heavy stains or anything of particular concern, just general soiling from a busy household.

Starting with the rugs, the first step in the cleaning process is to pre-test them. This is to establish the materials that the rug is made from but also to check for dye-fastness, as we certainly don’t want any colours to run during the clean!

Once this has been done & the technicians know exactly what they are working with, the rugs are placed on tarpaulins to protect the floor & are then thoroughly vacuumed front & back to remove any surface debris.

IMG 20240220 WA0008

Next, any notable stains are treated & an eco-sanitising pre-spray is applied. These solutions are then given time to dwell to help breakdown as much soiling as possible.

Our technician then gently agitates the rug which works the cleaning solutions & hot water into the rug whilst continuing to break up any stubborn soiling.

The final part of the clean is the traditional rinse extraction. This is where the cleaning solutions, hot water & remaining soiling are extracted from the rug.

The cleaning process was then repeated many times over as the customer had 8 rugs & 5 doormats to be cleaned!

As there were so many to be cleaned & our technicians were there all day, they used an air mover to help speed up the drying process.

Once the rugs were cleaned & left to dry, it was time to start on the carpet cleaning. The exact same cleaning method used for the rugs was also used on the carpets.

The cleaning method used on the rugs, doormats & carpets represents a full deep-clean and was also a green clean.

Amazing results on upholstery clean in Cheltenham

We were recently contacted by a customer who was looking to have some upholstery cleaned. She had tried to clean the 6 dining chairs & a footstool herself but it had not improved the overall appearance.

After asking a few simple questions over the phone, we were able to give the customer a quotation for the work which she accepted. We then booked in a convenient time for the customer to have the clean carried out.

As you can see from the photo, the dining chairs were considerably stained, mainly with watermarks, probably from where the customer had tried to clean them herself.

Our technician, Pete set to work by applying some stain treatments & eco-sanitising pre spray. He then gave them time to dwell to help breakdown the soiling.

Next, Pete used a handheld rotary tool to gentle agitate the upholstery, working in cleaning solutions & hot water.

The last step in the cleaning process is the rinse extraction. This is where all the remaining cleaning solutions, water & soiling are removed from the chair.

As you can see, our tried & tested cleaning method had great results on the dining chairs.

The cleaning technique used above was then used on the footstool which was also heavily soiled. Again, Pete achieved some impressive results & had the upholstery looking so much cleaner & fresher, as shown in the before & after photos below.

Successful Commercial carpet clean at Longleat

Another week, another visit to Longleat for our technician, Joanne. This time it was to clean the carpet in the sweet shop, we have cleaned this before, but due to the huge amount of footfall this shop receives, it requires a professional deep clean a few times a year.

The carpet in the sweet shop doesn’t look like carpet at all. It is a material called Flotex, which is a completely synthetic material that can be printed on to give it many different appearances. Owing to the huge number of fibres per metre on Flotex, it is able to conceal an enormous soil-load

WhatsApp Image 2024 01 22 at 14.55.43 d5788f44

Effective vacuuming will remove up to 79% of dry soils, so this was an important first stage of our cleaning process.

An eco-friendly pre-spray was then applied to the floor before our technician used a rotary machine & a CRB (contra-rotating brush) machine to agitate the cleaning solution & further break up any stubborn soiling, this helps ensure that the rinse extraction draws out as much as the debris as possible.

Lastly, an encapsulating solution was applied & brushed into the carpet using the rotary agitation machine, this aids carpet maintenance as it surrounds each soil particle and crystallizes it so it can’t attract other soils. The encapsulated soil particles release from the carpet fibres and are then removed by normal vacuuming, which will generally be done by the on site cleaning staff at regularly scheduled times.

The carpet was certainly looking cleaner as a result of Joanne’s hard work & was all ready to welcome the next lot hungry customers to the shop.

Rug & Velvet Upholstery cleaning in beautiful Wales

We were contacted by a customer in Wales at the start of year who was looking to have a couple of rugs & their velvet sofa cleaned. After answering some questions about them, we were able to provide the customer with a quotation which she accepted & this week saw our head technician, Jon travel to a beautiful Welsh village to carry out the clean.

The first part of the cleaning process with the rugs is to conduct a pre-test to check if the dye will run once wet.

Once it has been confirmed that this will not happen, Jon then vacuums the rugs both front & back.

Next, is the treatment of any visible stains. A treatment is applied as well as eco-sanitising pre-spray and these are then left to dwell to assist with breaking down any stubborn stains.

Once sufficient time has passed, the rugs are then gently agitated. This works the water & cleaning solution into the material whilst bringing any soiling/debris to the surface.

The final part of the cleaning process is the traditional rinse extraction. This machine removes all the remaining water, solutions and dirt off the rugs.

If the rugs we are cleaning have fringes, these would also be cleaned.

As you can see in the photo above, Jon then used a couple of air movers to help speed up the drying process whilst he tackled the sofa. If we are not there long enough for the use of air movers, we recommend hanging rugs on the backs of dining chairs or over a banister to speed the drying process up. If you are able to pop the heating on low & open the windows slightly to allow good airflow through the property, this will also help the drying process along.

WhatsApp Image 2024 01 17 at 12.57.00 a7e8a253

When it comes to upholstery in particular, our cleaning method can differ depending on the fabric of the sofa. Many people think their sofa is velvet but it is often not the case that is it pure cotton velvet. Many sofas can feel like velvet but often be a velvet mix or a fabric called viscose which does not respond well to the rinse extraction method of cleaning.

Therefore, it is always important that before any cleaning takes place, our technicians conduct a pre test of the fabric so that they know exactly what they are working with & amend the cleaning process to suit the fabric & get the best possible results.

Having conducted a pre test on the back on the sofa in an area that cannot be seen, Jon determined that this was a 50/50 cotton/polyester mix, because of this & the fact it had a short pile meant that it could be rinse extracted.

The cleaning method used was then very similar to that used on the rugs. It was thoroughly vacuumed & then the eco-friendly pre spray was applied & brushed into the fabric before being given time to dwell. Next up was the traditional rinse extraction which was set to low pressure so that the fabric was not saturated. Then terry cloths were used to absorb more moisture whilst also grooming the fabric so it was back looking all uniform.

This video shows Jon at work finishing off the sofa clean, using the terry cloths as mentioned above.

Excellent Commercial Upholstery Clean at Longleat

It was a welcome return to Longleat Safari Park in Warminster, Wiltshire for our technician Joanne this week to clean some commercial upholstery in one of the coffee shops. We are pleased to visit the park a few times a year to handle the cleaning of some of the upholstery in-order to get it all clean & fresh for their customers.

It was a busy day for Joanne as she had a mixture of twin booths, large booths, 18 chairs & a very long booth that seats 28 people to clean.

She started by using a commercial grade vacuum to remove as much surface debris as possible. Before treating any visible stains & applying an eco-sanitising pre-spray. These solutions are then given time to dwell in-order to break down as much stubborn soiling as possible.

Then it was time to gentle agitate the upholstery. This is where a hand help machine is used to gently agitate the fabric whilst applying a mixture of hot water & cleaning solutions to provide an in-depth clean

The final part of the cleaning process is the traditional rinse extraction. This uses the big blue extraction machine you can see in some of the photos & it extracts all remaining soiling, water & cleaning products. Depending on the severity of soiling, this part of the process can sometimes be repeated.

It was a productive day for our technician Joanne as she followed this cleaning method on all the upholstery with some great results. All of the upholstery was left to dry looking cleaner, fresher & sanitised ready for the next batch of customers.

Outstanding results on commercial carpet clean in Cheltenham

A few weeks before Christmas, we were contacted by a hostel in Cheltenham who were thinking about having the carpets cleaned in the communal areas. With any commercial enquires like this, we always recommend arranging for one of our trained technicians to come out & conduct a short survey before suppling you with a quote. This enables us to assess the condition & specific requirements of the carpets which means we can tailor the clean to suit your business needs & provide you with a comprehensive quote.

Within a week of the initial enquiry, our technician Pete visited the property & carried out a survey of all the carpets & provided the business with two separate quotes as they were deciding how they wanted to tackle the clean.

They decided to go ahead with having all the communal carpets cleaned rather than just the ground floor, and this week, less than 1 month from making contact, Pete returned with the help of Mike to carry out the clean.

The brief was to clean all 4.5 floors of stairs & hallways, most of which were heavily stained.

Commercial Carpet Cleaning

Communal area carpets endure a high level of wear over time. Outdoor soiling is tracked in on shoes, spills occur & because the space is no single persons responsibility, the dirt rapidly accumulates. This was certainly the case here, due to the heavy footfall & the magnitude of some of the staining on these carpets, a traditional rinse extraction was the method used to deliver the best possible results.

The first step in the process is to use a commercial vacuum to thoroughly vacuum the carpets to remove as much surface debris as possible.

Next, any notable stains are treated & an eco-sanitising pre-spray is applied to the carpets. These solutions are then given time to dwell in-order to break down the soiling.

Once sufficient time has elapsed for the stain treatments to have worked, the rotary agitation machine is used to gently agitate the carpets using hot water & cleaning solutions. This provides a thorough clean & also helps bring loosened soiling to the surface ready for rinse extraction.

The final part of the cleaning process is the traditional rinse extraction. This is where all the remaining soiling, water & cleaning solutions are removed from the carpets. As you can see from the photos either side, this tried & tested cleaning method bought out some truly amazing results.

Dustless Wood Floor Sanding

In this case study, our team carry out a full restoration sand & refinish on Victorian-era uneven floorboards with a dated “orange” varnish.

Let’s take a look at what the team achieved…

The Green Man wood floor sanding kit

Professional dustless wood floor sanding will always commence with a detailed site survey. As a rule of thumb, the older the property, the more chance there is that wooden flooring will have warped and expanded. There is also a much greater chance that we will find areas of damage from historic overlaying of carpets, impacts from accidents and discolouration from water ingress.

Irregularities across floorboards will mean a job is likely to take longer and include a broader variety of wood floor repairs, such as wood filing and floorboard replacement. On this job, the main issue was that various floorboards had been replaced over the years. We discussed the likely consequences with the owner, who was happy to proceed.

Choosing the right type of finish for a sanded wood floor –

Applying sample oil finishes to pine floorboards
Choosing oil finishes for a pine wood floor

When one of our team makes a site visit to carry out a (free) survey of your wooden floor, this is often the time to discuss how your would like your floor to look after the wood has been sanded. By applying either lacquer (varnish) or wood oils, you floor will be protected and can have either a natural looking finish, or a completely different colour and a glossy sheen. There is a huge range of options and it is well worth doing your own research into this in advance, so that you begin the process armed with some ideas.

In this case, our customer had decided that a coloured hard wax oil should be applied. We recommended Fiddes Hard Wax Oil, and narrowed down the likely colours to: Whiskey, Walnut, Dark Oak & English. In the image above, you can see our technician Tom has sanded back a small section of floorboard and applied the four samples. This is carried out at the beginning of a job or before the job, so that there is sufficient time to decide on (and order!) the desired finish.

Dustless belt-sanding

Using the Pallman belt sander

We use a Pallman Cobra Classic belt sanding machine to ensure a high quality finish whilst maintaining a clean, virtually dustless working environment. This is the tool we use to remove all signs of previous finishes and to ensure floorboards are level.

Edging

The belt sander will get the majority of a wooden floor sanded back, but won’t reach into the edges of a room. This is where an edge sander is used. We use a Pallman Edge Sander paired with a high power, filtering vacuum to ensure minimal dust…

The video demonstrates the power of the edging sander, as well as its ability to reach right up to skirting boards. This particular model has in-built lights which are important in helping our team deliver a high quality finish.

Finishing touches

On most wood jobs, we use our Bona Flexisand as a final sanding machine. It works with 4 independently rotating sanding discs to create a flawless final finish.

Achieving a fine finish on pine floorboards using Bona Flexisand
Achieving a fine finish on pine floorboards using Bona Flexisand

Although some sanding companies use these machines, not all do. They have a particular benefit when it comes to parquet wood floor types, but benefit all wood floor sanding in achieving a high quality finish.

While the belt & edge sanders will achieve a level floor and take the wood back to its raw state, neither machine could be described as subtle. For oiled finishes, the professional sander needs a machine with a circular or orbital motion to ensure that any marks from the initial heavy sanding can be removed. Oils will sharply define both the grain of the wood, as well as imperfections and scratches caused by the sanding process.

Applying Hard Wax Oil to the pine floorboards

Once all the sanding was completed and the floor completely dust-free, it was time to apply the Fiddes Hard Wax Oil. Our client had selected Walnut as the preferred finish.

This was carefully applied by hand using lint-free cloths.

Sometimes, this is a process that can be done using our machinery. However, in this instance, manual application was specified owing to the gaps in the floorboards.

In the image opposite, you can see how striking the effect of a tinted oil can be. Modern wax-based oils can be either clear or stained and with a range of finishes from matt to gloss.

From the manufacturer’s website:

Fiddes Hard Wax Oil is a blend of natural oils & waxes offering exceptional durability & resistance for internal natural wood flooring, kitchen worktops (wood) and areas subjected to a high degree of wear.

One of the key benefits of oiling a wooden floor is that it can be cleaned and refinished without re-sanding. This is definitely worth considering if you want a modern, natural looking floor that will need to withstand high traffic, or pets, or children!

Great results on commercial carpets & upholstery in Cheltenham

On Tuesday evening, two of our technicians were booked to clean commercial carpets & upholstery at The Brewery Quarter in Cheltenham. This was the result of a successful survey back in September which enabled us to provide the company with a quote & cleaning plan tailored to their requirements.

The brief was to clean seven short flights of stairs, plus all the small landings & turns in-between plus two large landings. As you can imagine these areas have a lot of foot traffic & would certainly benefit from a professional deep clean.

The first step (pardon the pun!) was to thoroughly vacuum all of these areas to remove any surface debris before they applied stain treatments & eco-sanitising pre-spray to them. These solutions were then given time to dwell so that they can break down & loosen as much dirt, grease & stains as possible.

The next step is to use rotary agitation to further loosen any remaining soiling as well as working the cleaning solutions into the carpets to allow for a rigorous clean.

The final part of our cleaning process is the traditional rinse extraction. This is where we use hot water to extract any remaining soiling or product residue from the carpets.

Once the carpets had been successfully tackled, it was time to start work on the upholstery. There were seven office chairs with a heavy soil load that were subject to the above cleaning method to ensure a good level of clean.

Once the clean was successfully completed, the carpets & upholstery were left to dry naturally overnight so everything was clean & dry for the office workers to return the following day. Upon completion, all of the carpets & upholstery have received the full professional cleaning method & have been sanitised, deodorised & left more resistant to staining as part of the process

Excellent results on slate tiles in Monmouth, Wales

Last week saw one of our technicians travel to beautiful Monmouth to carry out a professional clean to some large slate tiles & grout following a successful survey conducted last month. The brief was to carry out a deep clean of the tiled entrance hall & then callback the following day to apply a new seal.

Once all the area has been cleared, an environmentally friendly cleaning solution is applied to the slate & a rotary machine is used to gently agitate the floor. A wet vac is then used to collect the resulting slurry, this part of the process is then repeated.

The grout lines are then cleaned by hand using a grout brush.

At this stage the floor has been taken back to it’s initial finish & is now left to dry naturally.

WhatsApp Image 2023 12 06 at 13.19.25 b336c5a8

Our technician then returned the following day to apply a few coats of seal. This protective seal acts as a barrier to spillages & build-ups. Depending on the type of seal chosen, this will often significantly improve the appearance of the tile, intensifying colour and increasing the depth of the grain.

In the images below, you can see the impact the seal has on the area

Successful early morning commercial upholstery clean in Monmouth

We were recently contacted by restaurant chain, Loungers as they were looking to have a very large sofa cleaned in Monmouth as the front of the cushions were beginning to look a little dull.

So this morning, our technician Pete had an early start as he headed off to Monmouth to clean the sofa before the restaurant opened.

The sofa was given a full deep clean using our tried & tested method of traditional rinse extraction which gets great results on a well used sofa such as this. The first step in the process is to vacuum the sofa, this removes as much of the surface debris as possible. Next up, Pete treated any notable stains & used a eco-sanitising pre spray which was given time to dwell in-order to break up as much as staining/soiling as possible.

Once enough time had passed, Pete then used an agitation brush to gently agitate the upholstery which helps bring any remaining soiling to the surface ready for the final part in the cleaning process.

Lastly, it is time for the traditional rinse extraction. This part of the process uses hot water to extract any remaining soiling & product residue.

The end result is a deep clean which is also a green clean & has left the sofa looking much cleaner, fresher & sanitised.

Another job well done by Pete!
