Last week, our director Jon & Swindon-based technician Joanne travelled to Newbury, Berkshire to carry out a deep-clean of 117 office chairs. This was part of an office end-of-tenancy for the company involved, as they were planning to take these chairs with them to their next location.

How to deep-clean an office chair…

These particular chairs had solid plastic arms & backs, and a mesh fabric seat. This type of material provides ventilation & comfort, but can act as a net for debris. Having surveyed the chairs, we opted for a combination clean that used manual cleaning/wiping for the hard plastic surfaces, as well as traditional rinse extraction for the fabric.

To begin with, we prepped the chairs & addressed any notable staining. Usually, office furniture will have some coffee/ tea stains. However, in this instance, we didn’t encounter hardly any beverage based stains.

What we did find was quite a lot of chocolate debris that had lodged into the matrix of the material. As well as initial vacuuming, we found that our carpet awl (which we would normally use for carpet repair) came in very useful for pushing any stubborn bits through fabric to drop to the carpet below.

Once we had treated any stains, we then applied our eco-friendly, sanitising pre-spray to the fabric, agitated it into the material, then left it for the required 15 minutes dwell time. This is important, as it allows the solution sufficient contact time to break down soils & greases.

The hard plastics of the chair were addressed with the same solution, but applied using a terry towel. This proved to be very effective and a large amount of greasy soils were absorbed into the towels.

Once the preparatory work was complete on the initial batch of 40 chairs, we set up the extraction machines.

Unusually, some of the office staff were working at the far end of the office, so we partitioned the machines off into a vacant office & ran long lengths of hoses to limit noise as much as possible.

The video below gives some idea of the set-up…

How effective are eco-friendly cleaning solutions?

As part of operating a commercial cleaning company, we strive to continually improve the way we do things. This includes sourcing the latest & most effective eco-friendly cleaning solutions. Not all of this tech is new & the solution we used on this job relies on a similar action to micellar cleaning, more often associated with the cosmetics industry.

With this product, the powerful micelle cleaning action causes fats, greases, oils, proteins and sugars to repel from the surface so that they can be rinsed away with water, without damaging or reacting with the cleaning surface. It is not a typical caustic detergent or petroleum solvent, therefore it will not damage or react with the cleaning surface.

A fantastic level of clean.

The finished result was excellent.

It is satisfying when we manage to specify the right chemistry & method so that a high level of clean is achieved. The short clip below shows the finished chairs ready for collection and removal to the company’s new office space…
