We were recently contacted by the manager of Holst Victorian House in Cheltenham as the carpet runner on the staircase had a few holes & they were looking to have them repaired. A successful carpet repair will depend on a donor piece of the same carpet (similar colour/condition). This can either be an off-cut, or taken from a cupboard or out-of-the-way area. Ideally, there should be more donor carpet than the area that needs repairing.
Luckily, the customer had around 3 metres spare that we could use which was fortunate as a patterned carpet like this is always trickier to repair than a plain carpet.
As you can see, it is a lovely carpet & not one that you would necessarily see in an area of high traffic.
Whilst we aim to make repairs as seamless as possible, the outlines will sometimes still be visible & this was a potential issue here due to the pattern.

After inspecting the stair carpet & the donor carpet to see the dimensions & the condition of the carpet he is working with, our repair technician Jon got to work. As the customer had a sufficient amount of donor carpet, it was decided that the best course of action was to replace the whole step rather than cutting around the damaged area. This would create a much neater finish.
The cutting of the carpet is done using “naping shears” which allows Jon to trim the carpet pile to the correct/matching height. Once the damaged steps have been cut out, it it time to insert the donor piece. A slight colour variation is common & varies depending on how the donor piece has been stored as well as how much traffic & uv light the surrounding carpet has incurred. However, these minor discrepancies tend to level out over time.

As you can see from this picture, the repairs were done to a really great standard & replacing the whole step worked really well. Not only was this a safer option but was also more visually appealing.
