Last week, I did a bit of a carpet repair tour around the Cotswolds. Coincidentally, both repairs related to carpet burns from a fireplace…
We try and organise carpet repair work to be as efficient as possible, so that we can cover a wide service area. On this day, the repairs were in Kingham, OX7 and Winchcombe, GL54.

The first repair was of multiple burnt areas adjacent to a wood burning stove.
From my point of view, the larger an area of carpet is, the more tricky the repair can be.
There are various reasons why this is the case, the main one being that when you cut this type of cut-pile, deep carpet, it is almost impossible to cut perfectly along the vertical and horizontal matrix of the backing (which is what helps to hold the carpet together). The longer these cuts are, the more varied the hole you make becomes. And, by extension, the insert you need to create becomes more & more bespoke.
Here’s the cut carpet –

This type of deep, cut-pile carpet is very prone to shedding fibres, which only makes cutting a neat insert harder!

In this instance, the client requested that I use some of the additional spare carpet to create an additional mat to protect the carpet –

The second repair of the day involved quite a deep burn in front of an open fireplace –

Although the customer now has a wool rug to help protect the area, they understandably wanted rid of this unsightly mark.
In some ways, a similar repair to the morning’s work although, thankfully, a much more discrete area.
Although the final result was pretty good, the sourcing of insert material was not straightforward, The owner thought that several large rolls of carpet in the attic were the same carpet as the area in question. However, this wasn’t the case!
The solution was to use a piece of slightly different carpet as an insert for an area (of the correct type of carpet) in an adjoining room from underneath a cabinet,

then patch up this unseen area with a slightly mismatched piece of new carpet.
Sometimes, carpet repair calls for a bit of ingenuity!
If you have an area of damaged carpet that you would like to have repair, please feel free to get in touch & we’ll do our best to help.
